Description
Exceedingly rare group to Royal Naval Air Service Airship Petty Officer F.C. Wheeler.It includes:
1. His trio, in original named boxes, with original ribbons, unmounted.
The 1914-15 Star is named:
F.4520,
F.C. Wheeler,
P.O.M., R.N.A.S.
The War & Victory are named:
F.4520
F.C. Wheeler
L.M. R.N.A.S.
2. A period wooden painted frame, 5 inches x 4, containing the ultra-rare RNAS Trade Badge for a Coxswain of Airships in heavy gilt wire. I have only owned and seen for sale this one example in 40 years of collecting, and it is attributed! Setting off the badge are a bullion anchor, lengths of ribbon from his three medals and some rank lace.
3. An 8-inch section of aluminium support beam mounted on a frame above which is a plaque stating, "Naval Airship C. 18." for the C- or "Coastal" Class Airship in service from 1916-18, used on anti-submarine patrols.

4. An RNAS Petty Officer's visor cap in very serviceable condition and shape, with one moth nip to the right rear side of the cap. Unnamed.
5. Two photos measuring 6 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches, and 6 x 4 inches, showing RNAS Airships, one preparing to go aloft, and the other in flight with a close-up of the control car and personnel.
P.O. Frank Charles Wheeler enlisted in the RNAS as a Petty Officer Mechanic in May 1915. He served at the RNAS Wormwood Scrubs, the Airship recruiting and mounting base for Greater London, and the airship training base at RNAS Cranwell.

He was appointed a Leading Mechanic in August 1917 and later re-appointed Petty Officer.
RNAS groupings are rare, but for airship service impossibly rare. A photocopy of his service record is included.
