Description
A hand cut Japanese katagami from Kyoto, Japan. This and the others we have listed were from the early 1900's.
(There were newspapers from the 1930's amongst some of them.)
Made for placing a design on kimono cloth. They're paper made from mulberry that was then soaked in a persimmon tannin. The persimmon allows the paper to resist the dye or wax and allows the stencil to be used more than once. Some of these have been used and there may be pin holes in the paper.
This is a samurai crest. (Aka mon)
Similar to the crests of European knights, this would have been used by families whose ancestors were samurai (a fact to be very proud of). The clothing maker would have used this to put the families ancestral crest on their clothing.
